The Stem Blowout Hazard
If a ball valve stem is not retained from inside the body, full process pressure on the stem cross-section can explosively eject the stem when the packing or gland is loosened during maintenance. This is a lethal hazard that has caused fatal accidents.
Anti-Blowout Stem Design
Stem is assembled from inside the body (bottom-entry stem)
Stem shoulder or collar prevents upward ejection even with packing removed
External collars or retaining rings used on some designs
Blowout-proof stem is mandatory requirement in API 6D and most major specifications
Verification During Manufacturing
Valve manufacturers must demonstrate anti-blowout capability by testing: the stem must remain retained when the gland and packing are fully removed at maximum rated pressure. Test records are documented in the quality file.
Inspection Point for Buyers
When purchasing or receiving ball valves, inspect for anti-blowout stem design as a mandatory acceptance criterion. Request ITP documentation showing the manufacturer's blowout test records. This is non-negotiable for process plant and pipeline applications.
Safe Maintenance Practices
Even with anti-blowout stems, safe maintenance requires depressurizing and de-isolating the valve before packing work. Safe work procedures must document pressure isolation steps and verify zero pressure before any stem seal work begins.
