Valve Packaging and Shipping from China: Importer Guide
Updated: Aug 26
Valve export packing must protect machined ends, internal cleanliness, coatings, accessories and traceability through storage, handling and international transport. The packing specification should be agreed before production is complete—not improvised at the loading stage.
Start with the shipping conditions
Provide destination, route, transport mode, expected storage duration, climate, lifting restrictions and final delivery point. Sea freight, air freight, breakbulk and courier shipments expose valves to different moisture, vibration, handling and dimensional constraints.
Cleanliness and preservation
Specify required internal cleanliness, drying, compatible rust preventive, desiccant or vapor-corrosion protection, and the period of protection. Preservation materials must be compatible with the seats, elastomers, coatings and process service.
Protect flange, weld and threaded ends
Use secure end covers that protect gasket faces, bevels and threads from impact and contamination. Covers should remain attached during normal handling but be removable without damaging the machined surface. Do not lift a valve by handwheels, gear shafts or small-bore accessories.
Valve position during transport
The correct disc, ball, plug or gate position depends on the design and manufacturer’s preservation instructions. Supporting and blocking must prevent the obturator, stem, actuator and accessories from carrying unintended transport loads.
Cases, pallets and blocking
Select packaging from the weight, center of gravity, lifting method and route. Heavy valves need engineered blocking and accessible lifting points. Packing should prevent movement inside a case or container without loading vulnerable parts.
Wood packaging and ISPM 15
Where destination rules require regulated wood packaging material, use compliant treated and marked wood under ISPM 15. Requirements and exemptions vary, so the exporter and importer should verify the destination’s current plant-health rules before shipment.
Corrosion and moisture control
Barrier wrap, desiccant, sealed bags or vapor-corrosion inhibitors may be appropriate for sea transit or long storage. A sealed package can still trap moisture if the valve was packed wet, so cleaning and drying are essential.
Marking and traceability
Mark each package with purchase order, item or tag number, quantity, gross and net weight, dimensions, center of gravity where needed, lifting points, destination and handling symbols. The packing list should map every valve and accessory to a package.
Documents to agree
Typical requirements can include commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, certificate of origin where applicable, material certificates, test reports, inspection release and conformity documents required by the destination or contract. Do not promise a certificate unless its legal basis and issuer are confirmed.
Choose the delivery term carefully
State the named place and Incoterms 2020 rule in the contract. FOB, CFR, CIF, EXW and DAP allocate costs and risks differently; they do not by themselves define product quality, payment terms or customs compliance. Confirm which party books freight, insures cargo and handles each customs step.
Why fixed freight prices become misleading
Freight rates and transit times change with route, season, fuel, capacity, congestion and surcharges. Request a time-limited logistics quotation for the actual cargo dimensions, weight and destination instead of relying on an article’s historical price range.
Pre-shipment verification
Before loading, verify valve identification, preservation, end protection, loose accessories, package condition, weights, markings and documents. Loading photographs and a container or truck plan can help resolve later damage or shortage claims.
Information needed for a shipping quotation
Provide the final destination, delivery term, transport preference, quantities, package limits, documentation, storage duration and any hazardous-goods or import requirements. Wofer can then prepare order-specific packing and shipping details.
