It should be read together with the product standard and purchase specification. A mark can be legible and still be technically incomplete.
Why Marking Controls Risk
Industrial projects may receive hundreds of similar valves from several purchase orders. Once packaging is removed, markings become the fastest way to prevent the wrong class, alloy, trim, or flow direction from entering a line.

Traceability also supports material verification, pressure-test review, maintenance, warranty investigation, and incident analysis. If a heat number on the body cannot be linked to an MTR and manufacturing record, the certificate package may describe the order without proving which document belongs to that physical valve.
Nameplate vs Body Marking
A nameplate is an attached plate carrying information engraved, stamped, etched, or printed by a durable process. Body markings are cast, forged, stamped, or otherwise applied directly to the pressure-containing component. Some information may appear on both.
Body marking is harder to lose, while a nameplate can carry more data and project-specific fields. The purchase specification should state what must be integral, what may be on a plate, attachment method, language, units, character size, and durability.
Manufacturer Identification
The manufacturer's name or recognized trademark allows the valve to be connected with its technical file and responsible producer. Trading-company labels should not obscure the actual manufacturing identity when the project requires manufacturer approval or audit traceability.
Check that the mark matches the supplier named on certificates, drawings, declarations, and test reports. Brand, factory, and certificate issuer can legitimately differ in some supply chains, but the relationship should be documented before shipment.
Nominal Size
Size may be shown as NPS, DN, or both. These are nominal designations and should not be treated as measured diameter. For reducing, multiport, or special valves, all relevant end sizes and port geometry need clear documentation.
Receiving inspection should compare size marking with flange dimensions, thread designation, weld-end diameter, valve bore, and approved drawing. A correct nameplate cannot compensate for a physically incorrect end connection.
Pressure Class and Rating
Common markings include ASME class designations or PN ratings. They belong to defined pressure-temperature systems; a class number is not simply pressure in psi, and PN is not a direct one-to-one substitute.
Material group and temperature affect allowable pressure. Confirm that body, bonnet, ends, seats, bolting, and trim support the declared rating under the governing standard. Where a valve has a limited seat rating below body rating, the data sheet and operating documentation should make the limit clear.
Body Material
Body material marking may use a specification grade, recognized abbreviation, or code allowed by the governing standard. Buyers should avoid vague labels such as stainless steel or carbon steel when a precise grade is required.
Compare the body mark with MTR chemistry, mechanical properties, heat treatment, PMI results, and purchase order. Similar-looking castings can have very different corrosion resistance and temperature capability. Coating must not hide required identification.
Heat Number and Traceability Code
A heat number links material to a melt or production heat and its material test report. A component may also carry a serial number, batch number, casting number, or internal traceability code linking it to machining, assembly, and testing records.
The system must be unambiguous. If small parts cannot carry the full heat number, the quality plan should define transfer marking, bagging, tagging, or batch control. Traceability must survive cutting, repair, heat treatment, blasting, painting, and final assembly.
Product Standard
Marking may identify standards such as ASME B16.34, API 6D, API 600, API 602, API 609, EN standards, or project specifications when applicable. A standard mark is a technical claim and should only be applied when all relevant design, material, manufacturing, testing, and documentation requirements are satisfied.
Do not infer compliance from a familiar body shape. Ask the supplier to list the exact edition and any exceptions. Product certification, licensing, and monogram requirements are separate from merely printing a standard number.
Trim and Seat Information
Trim numbers or material codes can summarize stem, closure member, seating surfaces, and other internal materials, but coding systems vary by standard and supplier. A trim number should be decoded on the approved data sheet or bill of materials.
Soft-seat material is especially important because PTFE, reinforced PTFE, PEEK, elastomers, and engineered polymers have different chemical and temperature limits. When the nameplate lacks space, the serial number should reliably retrieve the full material list.
Flow Direction
Check valves, globe valves, control valves, pressure-reducing devices, and some directional ball or butterfly valves require correct flow orientation. The arrow should be permanent, visible after installation where practical, and consistent with the internal design.
An arrow may indicate normal process flow, pressure-containing direction, or preferred installation direction depending on product. Clarify unusual functions on drawings and instructions rather than assuming every arrow has the same meaning.
Project Tag and Serial Number
A project tag connects the valve to the P&ID, line list, data sheet, test package, and installation location. A serial number distinguishes one valve from another within the same model and can link to individual pressure and functional test records.
Tags should resist transport, weather, and cleaning. Wire tags can be useful for logistics but may not satisfy permanent-marking requirements. Verify numbering before packing; duplicated or transposed tags create field delays even when the hardware is correct.
Additional Service Markings
Special service may require markings for fire-safe design, cryogenic construction, low-emission packing, oxygen cleaning, sour service, chlorine service, cavity-relief direction, locking position, electrical classification, or operator settings.
Every such mark should be supported by the specified test, material, cleaning, or qualification record. Decorative stickers or generic catalog claims are not objective evidence. State the required wording and evidence in the purchase order.
Marking Methods
Cast and forged markings should remain legible without creating stress raisers or reducing required wall thickness. Stamping depth and location need control, especially on thin, high-strength, cyclic, or corrosion-sensitive parts.
Laser marking and engraving provide clear identification but must be compatible with material and service. Stainless steel marking processes should avoid contamination. Nameplate attachment by rivets, screws, wire, or welding must not damage the pressure boundary or become loose during vibration.
Small Valves and Limited Space
Small forged or instrument valves may not have room for every field. Applicable standards often prioritize essential marks and permit supplementary information on tags or packaging. The manufacturer should propose a marking map for approval.
Reduced space does not justify losing traceability. Use concise codes tied to controlled records, and ensure the receiving inspector can decode them without contacting multiple departments.
Common Marking Errors
Frequent defects include missing heat numbers, illegible stamping, inconsistent units, incorrect class, wrong material abbreviation, duplicate serial numbers, coating over marks, plate data that disagrees with the body, and flow arrows installed in the wrong direction.
Another serious error is applying marks before final material substitution or repair and failing to update them. Final inspection must compare the completed valve, as-built bill of materials, test records, and nameplate as one data set.
Receiving Inspection
Inspect every required field against the purchase order, approved drawing, and inspection plan. Check character legibility, permanence, plate attachment, spelling, units, standard edition where stated, arrows, tag numbers, and correspondence between body, bonnet, ends, and operator.
Photograph markings at sufficient resolution before packing. For large orders, use a register listing purchase-order item, tag, serial, size, class, material, heat, test certificate, crate, and photograph reference. This improves both shipment control and customer receiving.
Certificate Reconciliation
Material certificates should show specification, grade, heat number, chemistry, mechanical results, heat treatment where required, and issuer. Pressure-test records should identify the same valve through serial or traceability code.
PMI confirms alloy chemistry at measured points but does not replace mechanical-property or heat-treatment records. A certificate without a physical link to the valve is incomplete evidence, while a valve mark without supporting records is incomplete traceability.
Counterfeit and Misrepresentation Warning Signs
Warning signs include ground-off markings, plates fixed over previous plates, inconsistent fonts, unexplained welding near identification, copied certificate layouts, duplicate heat numbers across incompatible materials, and test reports lacking serial references.
These signs do not automatically prove fraud, but they require quarantine and investigation. Verify with the named manufacturer or approved inspection body, review supply-chain documents, perform dimensional and material checks, and preserve evidence.
Buyer Specification Checklist
Define the applicable marking standard; manufacturer identity; size; rating; material; heat number; product standard and edition; trim or seat code; flow arrow; tag; serial number; service marks; language; units; plate material; attachment; stamping restrictions; coating mask; document links; photographs; and spare-nameplate requirements.
Include an approved nameplate drawing in the document schedule for critical projects. State hold or witness points before mass production, because replacing incorrect plates after testing and coating introduces rework and traceability risk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a nameplate enough for material traceability? Not by itself. The identifier must link the physical valve to valid material and manufacturing records. Can paint cover cast markings? Required marks must remain legible; specify masking or restoration under an approved procedure.
