How to Verify Valve Supplier Certificates: API, ISO and CE

A certificate copy is only a starting point when sourcing valves. Buyers should verify the issuing body, legal entity, manufacturing location, scope, product configuration, standard edition, status and traceability to the ordered valve. Management-system certification, a product license, a type-test report and a regulatory declaration provide different evidence and are not interchangeable.

Separate the Types of Evidence

ISO 9001 certification covers an organization's quality management system within the scope and sites stated on the certificate. It does not certify that every valve conforms to API 6D, API 600, API 602 or a project specification. Product conformity still requires drawings, material control, inspection, testing and records for the order.

An API Monogram license authorizes the named facility to apply the API mark to products within the listed licensed scope while the license is active and program requirements are met. A supplier saying it manufactures 'to API 6D' is not the same as an active API 6D Monogram license, and a license held by another factory or sister company does not automatically cover the shipment.

CE marking under the EU Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) is a regulatory conformity process for pressure equipment within its scope. Evidence normally includes classification, the applicable conformity-assessment module, technical documentation and an EU Declaration of Conformity. A notified body participates when the applicable category and module require it; a four-digit body number is not a universal requirement for every PED item.

Verify an API Monogram Claim

Search the API Composite List by legal company name, license number and facility location. Confirm status is Active, the specification and licensed product scope match the valve, and the address matches the manufacturing site. API defines statuses such as Applicant, Expired, Suspended and Canceled; these do not authorize current use of the mark.

Compare the API mark and license number on the product and records with the live directory. Check the manufacturing date and applicable specification edition, and review API fraud alerts when a certificate or claim looks unusual. Save dated evidence from the directory in the procurement file.

Verify ISO 9001 Certification

Check the certificate number, legal entity, site address, scope, issue and expiry dates, certification body and accreditation mark. Verify it through IAF CertSearch where available or contact the certification body and its accreditation body. ISO develops ISO 9001 but does not itself certify companies.

Read the scope carefully. A certificate for sales, machining or distribution may not cover valve design, assembly and testing at the proposed manufacturing site. If production is outsourced, identify which certified organization controls each process.

Verify PED and CE Documentation

Determine whether the ordered valve falls within PED 2014/68/EU, its fluid group and category, and whether it is pressure equipment, an assembly or equipment under sound engineering practice. Review the selected conformity-assessment module and the manufacturer's EU Declaration of Conformity.

Where a notified body is involved, verify its identification number and authorized PED scope in the European Commission's NANDO database. Match certificate modules, product scope, materials and manufacturing location. CE marking alone is not a test certificate and should not be treated as proof of API or ISO product conformity.

Material and Service Standards Are Not Generic Certificates

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 provides requirements and recommendations for selecting materials used in H2S-containing oil and gas production environments. Compliance depends on material condition, hardness, heat treatment, environmental limits and product application. Ask for a material compliance statement tied to the bill of materials and service parameters—not a vague company-wide 'NACE certificate.'

Other approvals also have limited scope. WRAS approval applies to named products and materials for water-system use; ATEX documentation applies to equipment and protective systems for explosive atmospheres as relevant to the actuator, solenoid, switch box or mechanical ignition assessment; regional approvals must match the destination and exact product.

Match Documents to the Ordered Valve

Create a document matrix listing each purchase-order requirement, required evidence, responsible issuer, submission stage and acceptance authority. Link valve tags or serial numbers to material certificates, heat numbers, drawings, pressure and leakage reports, NDE, coating, actuator tests and any type-test or regulatory certificate.

For a type-test certificate such as fire, fugitive-emission or cryogenic qualification, verify the standard and edition, test laboratory or witness, report number, valve design, size and class range, body and trim materials, seat and packing configuration, production extensions and exclusions. A similar-looking valve may fall outside the qualified range.

Use Factory Audits and FAT Correctly

A factory audit evaluates whether the actual site, people, equipment and controls can deliver the contracted scope. Review incoming-material control, special processes, calibration, nonconformance control, traceability, test facilities, subcontractors, document retention and previous corrective actions.

Factory acceptance testing verifies defined characteristics of the sampled or ordered valves under an approved ITP. It complements but does not replace certification. State sampling, witness and hold points, procedures, acceptance criteria, notice periods and final documentation before production.

Commercial Claims and Red Flags

Do not assume a universal 15–30% certification premium or fixed documentation fee. Commercial impact depends on valve configuration, licensed scope, required qualification, test witnessing, documentation and order volume. Ask for an itemized quotation that separates routine production records, special testing and third-party attendance.

Red flags include altered logos, mismatched fonts, missing certificate numbers, an address different from the factory, an expired or non-active status, a scope that excludes manufacturing, unverifiable QR codes, a certificate belonging to another entity, and refusal to provide a declaration or underlying report.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ISO 9001 mean a valve is API certified?

No. ISO 9001 certifies a management system within a stated scope. API product conformity or Monogram authorization requires separate, product-specific evidence.

Must every PED valve show a notified body number?

No. Notified-body involvement depends on PED classification and the chosen conformity-assessment module. Verify the category, module, declaration and NANDO scope rather than using the presence of a number as the only test.

Is NACE MR0175 a factory certificate?

No. It is a materials-selection standard for defined H2S-containing oil and gas production environments. Compliance must be demonstrated for the ordered materials, condition and service limits.

For a document review, send the valve schedule, destination market, required API or product standard, PED category or project requirement, service conditions and document index. Wofer Valve will confirm which licenses, declarations, type-test reports and production records apply to the proposed manufacturing scope; buyers should verify current status through the official directories above.
