Packing Material Options

Flexible graphite: High temperature service, excellent sealing, standard for fugitive emission control
Braided packing: Carbon, PTFE, or combination fibers for general service
Spring-loaded packing: Maintains seal load as packing relaxes
Live Loading Systems
Live-loaded or spring-energized packing systems maintain constant compression as packing relaxes over time. Belleville disc springs or coil springs provide continuous load to prevent fugitive emissions. This approach is widely specified for fugitive emission compliance.

Packing Installation and Maintenance

Troubleshooting Stem Leaks
Stem leaks may result from worn packing, under-loaded gland, thermal cycling, corrosion damage, or stem scoring. Diagnosis begins with visual inspection and gland bolt torque check. Replacing packing during shutdown or using injection fittings for online repair are common remedies.
