Valve Specification Sheets: Content Requirements and Best Practices

The Importance of Valve Data Sheets

A valve data sheet (valve specification sheet) is the primary document that communicates technical requirements from the process engineer and the project to the valve manufacturer. A well-prepared data sheet ensures that the supplier understands exactly what is required, reduces requests for information (RFIs), and helps prevent specification non-compliance that could lead to expensive rework or valve failures.

Essential Information in a Valve Data Sheet

  • Service description: fluid name, phase, temperature, pressure

  • Flow rates: design, normal, minimum, maximum

  • Valve type, size, and end connection (flange class, face-to-face dimension)

  • Body, trim, and seat material specifications

  • Actuator type and signal (if power-operated)

  • Special requirements: fire-safe, low-emission, cryogenic, sour service

Process Conditions Section

The process conditions section should clearly state all relevant operating parameters including: upstream and downstream pressures, operating temperatures (normal and upset), fluid composition (especially for corrosive or hazardous fluids), flow coefficient (Cv) required, and allowable pressure drop. For control valves, include the control range and normal operating point.

Valve Construction Details

This section specifies: valve type (gate, globe, ball, butterfly, etc.), bore (full bore or reduced bore), end connections (ASME flange class, pipe schedule for BW), facing (raised face, ring-type joint, flat face), and face-to-face dimension standard (ASME B16.10, API 6D, ISA S75.15). Body and bonnet material must be specified using the appropriate ASTM designation.

Testing and Inspection Requirements

  • Specify applicable test standard (API 598, EN 12266, BS 6755)

  • Define shell test, seat test, and backseat test pressures and durations

  • Indicate if any NDE (RT, UT, PT, MT) is required

  • State if witness testing or third-party inspection is required

  • Fugitive emission test standard if applicable (ISO 15848, API 622)

Documentation Requirements

List all documentation required with the valve order, such as: material test reports (MTR / EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2), dimensional drawings, assembly and exploded view drawings, test certificates, coating and painting records, and spare parts list. For critical valves, a valve data book including all quality records may be required.

A comprehensive and unambiguous valve specification sheet is the foundation of a successful valve procurement.
