Valve Procurement Specifications and Data Sheets

  • May 31
  • 2 min read

Comprehensive valve specifications and data sheets are essential for ensuring the right product is purchased for each application. These documents communicate design requirements, material standards, testing requirements, and documentation expectations to valve manufacturers and suppliers.

Elements of a Valve Specification

  • Applicable codes and standards (ASME, API, ISO, NACE)

  • Design pressure and temperature ratings with safety margins

  • Body and trim material requirements with ASTM grades

  • End connection type, facing, and dimensions

  • Operation requirements: manual, gear, actuator type

Valve Data Sheet Structure

A valve data sheet captures all technical requirements in a standardized format. It includes tag number, service description, fluid properties, design conditions, and dimensional requirements. The data sheet serves as the primary communication document between engineering, procurement, and the valve supplier during the bid and manufacturing process.

Inspection and Test Plan Requirements

  • Required witnessing and hold points for owner inspection

  • Hydrostatic shell test pressure and duration

  • Seat leakage test class and acceptance criteria

  • Non-destructive examination requirements (RT, UT, MT, PT)

  • Dimensional inspection and documentation requirements

Material Traceability and Certification

Pressure-containing components must be supplied with material test reports (MTRs) certified to the applicable ASTM or EN material standard. MTRs document chemical composition and mechanical properties of each heat of material. For critical services, additional requirements such as positive material identification (PMI) using XRF analyzers may be specified.

Special Requirements

  • Cleaning requirements for oxygen, hydrogen, or high-purity service

  • Coating and painting specifications for corrosive environments

  • Packing emission certification to ISO 15848 or API 622

  • Charpy impact test requirements for low-temperature service

  • Fire-safe certification to API 607 or API 6FA

Documentation Package

The documentation package accompanying valve delivery typically includes the data sheet, dimensional drawing, hydrostatic test certificate, seat leakage test certificate, MTRs, and inspection release notes. For valves with actuators, additional documentation covers actuator sizing calculations, wiring diagrams, and functional test reports.
