Valve Packing: Live-Loading Systems for Fugitive Emission Control

Introduction
Live-loading uses Belleville (disc spring) washers stacked under the gland follower to maintain constant, controlled compression on the packing set. This compensates for packing relaxation, wear, and thermal cycling, providing long-term fugitive emission control without frequent manual adjustment.
How Belleville Spring Stacks Work
Belleville washers deflect under load to store spring energySpring load applied to gland follower maintains packing compressionAs packing consolidates or wears, springs deflect further maintaining loadSpring load is predictable and reproducible from installation to installationStacks configured in series increase deflection; parallel increases load
Emission Class Compliance
ISO 15848-1 Class BH (500 ppm) and Class AH (100 ppm) can be achieved with live-loaded graphite packing. API 624 and MACT regulations in North America require emission-qualified packing for valves in volatile hazardous air pollutant (HAP) service at refineries and chemical plants.
Spring Selection and Installation
Spring load must match packing manufacturer's recommended stress rangeTypical packing stress 3500 to 10000 psi on packing cross-section areaSprings must be installed in correct orientation (concave face direction matters)Use calibrated spring load indicators or torque specifications for installationColor-coded spring kits simplify selection for different stem diameters
Maintenance Advantages
Live-loaded valves rarely require packing adjustment between scheduled maintenance intervals. When stem leakage does occur, it typically indicates packing end-of-life rather than a simple adjustment need. Record spring deflection at installation to track compression loss over time.
Retrofit Applications
Many existing valves can be retrofitted with live-loading kits as part of a plant LDAR compliance program. The retrofit typically requires: machining the stuffing box for correct depth, installing emission-certified packing, and fitting Belleville spring washers with correct load. Document the retrofit in the valve maintenance records.
