Fire-safe valves maintain pressure boundary integrity during and after a fire event. Meeting fire test standards ensures valves do not become ignition sources or release flammable media under fire conditions.
Key Fire Test Standards
Several international standards govern fire testing of valves. The most widely referenced are API 607, API 6FA, ISO 10497, and BS 6755 Part 2. Each defines test procedures, temperatures, and acceptance criteria.
API 607: Fire test for quarter-turn valves and actuators
API 6FA: Fire test for valves used in oil and gas service
ISO 10497: Testing of valves; fire type-testing requirements
BS 6755 Part 2: British standard for fire type-testing (largely superseded by ISO 10497)
Fire Test Procedure Overview
During a fire test, the valve is exposed to a controlled flame at temperatures reaching 750–1000°C for a defined duration, typically 30 minutes. External leakage and seat leakage are measured during and after the test.
Pre-fire leakage: Baseline measurement at rated pressure
Fire exposure: Valve subjected to flame at specified temperature profile
During-fire measurement: External leakage recorded continuously
Post-fire leakage: Valve cooled and retested for seat and body integrity
Design Features for Fire Safety
Fire-safe valves incorporate design features that maintain sealing after soft seat or packing materials are destroyed by fire. Metal-to-metal backup seats and fire-resistant stem seals are standard features.
Secondary metal seat: Provides backup sealing when soft insert burns away
Antistatic device: Prevents static charge buildup that could cause ignition
Fire-resistant stem packing: Graphite or metal packing replaces elastomers
Bolted body joints: Spiral wound or ring joint gaskets resist fire damage
Specifying Fire-Safe Valves
Specify fire-safe certification when valves are in flammable fluid service or near potential fire hazards. Require third-party test certificates referencing the specific standard applied.
List applicable standard in valve datasheet
Require test certificate from accredited laboratory
Confirm test was conducted on same valve design and size range
Consider fire-safe actuators for automated valves in fire zones
