A comprehensive valve documentation package supports installation, operation, maintenance, and regulatory compliance. Knowing what to request during procurement prevents gaps that cause problems later in the asset lifecycle.
Material Documentation
Material traceability links valve components to mill certificates proving composition and mechanical properties. For pressure-containing parts, full traceability to ASTM or EN 10204 3.1 is standard.
Mill test reports (MTR): Chemical composition and mechanical test results for body and bonnet
EN 10204 3.1 certificate: Issued by the manufacturer; inspector-witnessed mill tests
EN 10204 3.2 certificate: Verified by independent third party; required for nuclear and critical service
Heat number traceability: Link each component to the specific cast or heat
Dimensional and Design Documentation
Dimensional drawings confirm the valve will fit in its intended location. Valve assembly drawings enable disassembly and parts identification for maintenance.
Outline drawing: Face-to-face, flange bolt circle, height, and weight
Assembly drawing: Exploded view showing all parts with part numbers
BOM (bill of materials): List of components with material designation
Sectional drawing: Shows internal configuration and seating arrangement
Test and Inspection Documentation
Test records prove the valve was examined and met acceptance criteria at the factory. These records are required by most quality management systems and regulatory bodies.
Hydrostatic test report: Pressure, duration, and result for shell and seat tests
NDE reports: RT, UT, MT, or PT results with radiographs or records
Visual inspection report: Surface condition, coating, and dimensional check
Functional test report: For actuated valves; stroke time, signal response, torque
Operating and Maintenance Manuals
Installation, operation, and maintenance (IOM) manuals guide field personnel. They contain torque specifications, lubrication requirements, and troubleshooting guides.
IOM manual: Installation instructions, commissioning steps, operating procedures
Spare parts list: Recommended spare parts with manufacturer part numbers
Maintenance schedule: Recommended inspection and replacement intervals
Safety data: Weight, center of gravity for lifting, pressure/temperature limits
