A valve data book consolidates all documentation required to demonstrate that a valve has been correctly specified, manufactured, tested, and installed. Completeness of valve data books is a mechanical completion and handover requirement on EPC projects.
Contents of a Valve Data Book
Purchase order and valve data sheet (VDS)Material test certificates (MTCs) for body, bonnet, and trimDimensional inspection recordsPressure test certificates (shell and seat)NDE reports (RT, UT, PT/MT)Fire test certificate (if applicable)Painting inspection records and coating thickness measurementsActuator and solenoid valve test certificatesATEX/IECEx certificates (if applicable)
Valve Data Sheet (VDS)
The VDS is the primary technical specification document linking the P&ID tag number to design conditions, valve type, material class, and functional requirements. It is the reference for procurement, fabrication, and testing.
Inspection and Test Plan (ITP)
The ITP defines the hold and witness points during manufacturing. Third-party inspection involvement is specified for safety-critical valves. ITP sign-off by inspector and manufacturer quality representative confirms compliance at each stage.
Electronic Data Books
Modern projects deliver valve data books electronically, linked to the plant asset register (SAP PM, Maximo) via tag number. Document control software (Aconex, Documentum) manages revisions and distribution.
