Nuclear power plants have the most demanding valve requirements of any industry due to the high safety consequences of valve failure, the radiation environment, and the stringent quality assurance and documentation requirements. Valves in nuclear service must meet ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III requirements, be qualified for seismic and environmental conditions, and maintain functionality for the 40-60 year design life of the plant.
Nuclear Valve Classes and Standards
ASME BPV Code Section III defines three classes of nuclear valves based on their safety significance: Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. Class 1 valves are those whose failure could prevent the plant from achieving safe shutdown. Class 2 valves could adversely affect the plant's ability to remove decay heat. Class 3 valves are all other valves in nuclear safety-related systems.

Valve Qualification for Nuclear Service
Nuclear valve qualification demonstrates that the valve will perform its design function under normal operating conditions, design basis accident conditions, and post-accident environmental conditions. Qualification methods include type testing, analytic evaluation, and operating experience.
Maintenance and Life Extension of Nuclear Valves
Maintenance of nuclear valves is complicated by radiation exposure to maintenance personnel, limited accessibility due to containment boundaries, and the need for rigorous work planning and documentation. As nuclear plants pursue life extension to 60 or 80 years, valve condition assessment and life prediction become important for determining which valves can remain in service.
