Understanding Valve Piping Standards: ASME, API, EN, and JIS Explained

ASME Standards: The North American Foundation
ASME B16.34 is the foundational standard for pressure-temperature ratings, dimensions, tolerances, materials, nondestructive examination requirements, testing, and marking of valves. It applies to gate, globe, check, ball, and butterfly valves and is referenced by virtually all other ASME valve standards. ASME B16.5 covers pipe flanges and flanged fittings from Class 150 to 2500 in sizes NPS 1/2 through 24. ASME B16.10 specifies face-to-face and end-to-end dimensions of valves, ensuring interchangeability between manufacturers. ASME B16.25 covers butt-welding ends, and ASME B16.47 extends flange dimensions to larger sizes NPS 26 through 60.
API Standards: The Oil and Gas Benchmark
API valve standards are the benchmark for the oil and gas industry globally. API 600 covers steel gate valves for flanged and butt-welded ends in general oil and gas service. API 602 addresses small forged steel gate, globe, and check valves. API 603 specifies corrosion-resistant gate valves in Classes 150 and 300. API 6D is the comprehensive pipeline valve standard covering ball, check, gate, and plug valves for pipeline service. API 607 defines fire testing for quarter-turn valves. European EN Standards: The CE Mark Framework
The European valve market is governed primarily by EN standards and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 2014/68/EU). EN 12516 covers valve shell design strength requirements. EN 12266 specifies pressure testing of metallic valves. EN 558 defines face-to-face and centre-to-face dimensions for flanged valves. EN 1074 covers requirements for valves used in water supply applications. EN 593 addresses butterfly valves and EN 1171 covers industrial valves for cast iron gate valves. The CE mark on a valve indicates conformity with the PED, which is legally required for valves placed on the European market above certain pressure-volume thresholds.
JIS Standards: Requirements for Japanese Projects
Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) define valve requirements for projects in Japan and for Japanese engineering companies operating globally. JIS B2071 covers testing methods for valves. JIS B2081 specifies gate valves. JIS B2082 covers globe and stop-check valves. JIS B2083 addresses check valves. JIS B2084 covers ball valves. JIS B2085 specifies butterfly valves. JIS pressure ratings use a different classification system (10K, 20K, 40K, etc.) that differs from ASME pound ratings. Face-to-Face Dimensions: Ensuring Interchangeability
One of the most practically important aspects of valve standards for plant operators is the face-to-face dimension, which determines whether a replacement valve from a different manufacturer will fit into an existing piping installation without modifying the pipe connections. ASME B16.10 defines face-to-face and end-to-end dimensions for most common valve types and pressure classes. When these dimensions are standardized, any API 600 gate valve of a given size and pressure class from any compliant manufacturer will fit into the space of any other, simplifying maintenance and reducing inventory requirements. Non-standard face-to-face dimensions should always be confirmed at the time of valve specification to avoid installation problems during maintenance shutdowns.
