Understanding Valve Packing Systems: PTFE, Graphite, and Live-Loading

The Role of Valve Packing

Valve packing seals the annular space between the valve stem and the stuffing box, preventing process fluid from escaping to the atmosphere. Packing selection directly affects both fugitive emission compliance and valve operability over its service life.

PTFE Packing

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) packing is widely used in moderate-temperature, moderate-pressure service. PTFE offers excellent chemical resistance and low friction, reducing stem operating torque. It is suitable for temperatures up to approximately 200°C (390°F) and is common in water, steam condensate, and mild chemical service.

Flexible Graphite Packing

  • Temperature range: -200°C to +550°C (-330°F to +1020°F)

  • Excellent fire resistance and chemical compatibility

  • Higher stem friction than PTFE; requires clean, smooth stems

  • Suitable for steam, hydrocarbons, and most industrial chemicals

  • Common in API 622 and ISO 15848 low-emission packing systems

Live-Loading Packing Systems

Live-loading uses Belleville disc springs (disc spring stacks) installed under the packing follower to maintain constant compressive load on the packing. As packing consolidates or creeps over time, the springs compensate by expanding, maintaining the sealing force. Live-loading is essential for fugitive emission compliance and is required by many regulatory standards for VOC service.

Environmental Packing Standards

API 622 specifies performance requirements for packing used in process valve fugitive emission control. ISO 15848 Part 1 covers type testing of valve packing systems. Both standards define leak rate classes (A, B, C) measured with methane or helium tracer gas. Class A (<50 ppm) is the most stringent and is required for many hazardous or toxic fluid services.

Installation and Maintenance Best Practices

  • Follow manufacturer torque specifications for packing gland nuts

  • Use stem surface finish Ra ≤ 0.4 μm for optimum sealing

  • Inspect packing annually or per maintenance schedule

  • Replace live-loading springs if set height tolerance is exceeded

  • Never mix different packing ring types unless approved by manufacturer
