SS304 vs SS316: Which Grade to Choose?

SS304 (ASTM A351 CF8 / ASTM A182 F304) is the most commonly used stainless steel grade for ball valves. SS304 is cost-effective and suitable for water treatment, food processing, and general industrial applications where chlorides are present in low concentrations.

SS316 (ASTM A351 CF8M / ASTM A182 F316) contains molybdenum addition (2-3%), which significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments. This makes SS316 the preferred choice for marine applications, offshore platforms, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. For the most demanding corrosive environments, SS316L (low carbon version) offers improved weldability and resistance to intergranular corrosion.

Key Specifications and Design Standards

Stainless steel ball valves are available in sizes from 1/4 inch to 4 inch for threaded and socket weld types, and up to 12 inch or larger for flanged configurations. Pressure ratings typically range from 150 LB to 1000 LB, depending on the design and end connection type. Common design standards include API 607 (fire-safe testing), BS 5351, and DIN 3352. End connections are available in threaded (NPT/BSP), socket weld, butt weld, and flanged (ASME B16.5) configurations.

Seat material selection is critical for optimal performance. PTFE (Teflon) seats offer excellent chemical resistance and low friction but are limited to temperatures below 200 degrees Celsius. PEEK seats handle higher temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius and provide superior mechanical strength. For high-temperature applications above 300 degrees Celsius, metal-to-metal seats in stellite or Inconel are recommended.
