Pressure Relief Valves: The Last Line of Defense in Industrial Safety

Pressure relief valves (PRVs) and safety relief valves (SRVs) are critical safety devices installed in piping systems and pressure vessels to protect equipment and personnel from overpressure events. When system pressure exceeds the set pressure, these valves automatically open to discharge fluid and reduce pressure back to safe levels, then close again once normal conditions are restored. Without reliable pressure relief devices, overpressure events can rupture vessels, burst pipelines, and cause catastrophic explosions with severe consequences for personnel, equipment, and the environment.

Types of Pressure Relief Valves: Spring-Loaded vs Pilot-Operated

Spring-loaded pressure relief valves are the most common type, using a coil spring calibrated to the desired set pressure to hold the valve disc on the seat. When system pressure exceeds the spring force, the disc lifts and fluid is discharged. These valves are simple, self-actuating, and require no external power source, making them highly reliable. They are available in conventional, balanced bellows, and balanced piston designs to accommodate back pressure variations in the discharge system.

Pilot-operated pressure relief valves use a small pilot valve to control the main valve disc. The pilot valve responds to system pressure and directs control pressure to the main valve actuator, providing very tight seat closure at pressures up to 99% of set pressure. This design minimizes product loss from seat leakage, which is particularly valuable in high-value gas services. Pilot-operated PRVs are preferred for large-diameter, high-pressure applications and installations where seat tightness is a critical requirement.

ASME and API Standards for Pressure Relief

ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I covers safety valves for steam boiler service, while Section VIII covers pressure relief devices for unfired pressure vessels. API 520 provides sizing and installation guidelines for pressure-relieving devices in refineries. API 526 defines flanged steel pressure relief valves, establishing standard configurations and interchangeability among manufacturers. API 527 specifies seat tightness requirements. Every PRV installed on a pressure vessel in accordance with ASME must be stamped with the ASME UV (pressure vessel) or V (boiler) certification mark.

Proper Sizing and Set Pressure Selection

Correct sizing of pressure relief valves is essential for both safety and reliability. An undersized PRV cannot relieve sufficient flow to prevent overpressure, while an oversized PRV may chatter and experience rapid cycling that damages the seat and disc. The required relief area is calculated based on the maximum relieving capacity (in pounds per hour for steam or SCFM for gas), the inlet pressure at relieving conditions, the set pressure, and the fluid properties including molecular weight, temperature, and compressibility. Installation and Maintenance Best Practices

Pressure relief valves should be installed vertically with the outlet pointing upward or to the side, never downward, to prevent liquid accumulation in the valve body. The inlet piping should be as short and direct as possible, with a maximum pressure drop of 3% of set pressure. Discharge piping must be adequately supported to prevent stress on the valve body. PRVs should be tested and recertified at regular intervals, typically every one to five years depending on service severity and regulatory requirements. Spare valves should be maintained for hot swap replacement during scheduled maintenance shutdowns.
