Plug Valves: Reliable Quarter-Turn Isolation for Oil, Gas, and Chemical Service
Plug valves are one of the oldest and most reliable valve designs in industrial use, offering simple quarter-turn operation with a tapered or cylindrical plug rotating within the valve body to control flow. Despite competition from ball valves and butterfly valves in many applications, plug valves maintain their position as the preferred choice for certain services, particularly in oil and gas gathering, refinery process lines, and chemical handling where their inherent advantages in slurry handling, dead-end service, and multiport configurations provide unique value.
Wofer Valve manufactures lubricated plug valves and non-lubricated (sleeved) plug valves in sizes from 1 inch to 24 inch and pressure classes from 150 to 900 LB. Our plug valves conform to API 599 (metal plug valves) and ASME B16.34 standards, available in cast carbon steel, stainless steel, and ductile iron materials for diverse service conditions.
Lubricated Plug Valves: The Original Design
Lubricated plug valves use a viscous sealant (lubricant) injected under pressure through a fitting in the plug to coat the plug-to-body sealing surfaces. This lubricant reduces operating torque, prevents corrosion of the seating surfaces, and compensates for surface imperfections to provide tight shut-off. The sealant must be compatible with the process fluid and must be periodically replenished to maintain sealing performance. Lubricated plug valves are widely used in gas gathering, produced water, and crude oil pipeline applications where their ability to handle small amounts of solids in the flow stream is advantageous.
The sealant injection system also allows the valve to be serviced online without removing it from the pipeline. If a seat leak develops in service, additional sealant can be injected to restore sealing without shutdown. This feature makes lubricated plug valves particularly valuable in critical pipeline applications where valve maintenance must be performed while the line remains in service.
Non-Lubricated (Sleeved) Plug Valves
Non-lubricated plug valves eliminate the need for periodic sealant injection by using a resilient sleeve (typically PTFE or TFE-encapsulated) between the plug and the valve body. The sleeve provides the sealing function without requiring lubrication, making these valves virtually maintenance-free. PTFE-sleeved plug valves offer excellent chemical resistance and are widely used in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and food and beverage applications where lubricant contamination of the process fluid is unacceptable. They provide bidirectional bubble-tight sealing with low operating torque.
Multiport Plug Valves: Versatile Flow Diversion
One of the most significant advantages of plug valves over ball valves and butterfly valves is the availability of multiport configurations. Two-way, three-way, and four-way plug valves are available, enabling a single valve to perform the function of multiple conventional two-way valves in manifold and flow diversion applications. A three-way plug valve, for example, can direct flow from one inlet to either of two outlets, connect two inlets to a common outlet, or block all ports simultaneously. This capability simplifies piping system design and reduces installed costs in complex process configurations.
Plug Valve vs Ball Valve: Key Differences
While ball valves have largely replaced plug valves in many standard industrial applications due to their lower torque and broader availability of sizes and materials, plug valves retain advantages in specific areas. Plug valves handle slurries and viscous fluids better than ball valves because the wiping action of the plug past the seat opening tends to clear accumulated solids. Lubricated plug valves can be serviced in-line without disassembly. Multiport plug valves offer flow diversion capability not available from standard ball valves. For specialized applications requiring these features, plug valves remain the preferred solution.
