Pipeline Valve Maintenance in Pigging Operations

Pipelines equipped for pigging (mechanical cleaning, inspection, or product separation) impose specific requirements on mainline valves. Full-bore valves and proper design of valve internal geometry are essential for safe pig passage.

What is Pipeline Pigging

Pigs are mechanical devices propelled through pipelines by product flow or differential pressure. They are used for cleaning, inhibitor application, internal inspection (ILI), product batching separation, and dewatering. Pigs must pass through all mainline valves without becoming stuck.

Piggable Valve Requirements

  • Full bore (full opening): valve bore must match or exceed pipeline internal diameter

  • Smooth internal profile: no sharp edges, recesses, or protrusions that could catch pigs

  • Minimum valve length: cavity or recess geometry must allow pig to pass without becoming trapped

  • Material compatibility: cavity should not allow pig to hang up or disintegrate

Ball Valve Design for Pigging

Trunnion-mounted ball valves are the preferred choice for piggable pipelines. The through bore must be concentric with the pipeline centerline and free of recesses. DBB (double block and bleed) valves must be designed so that the cavity between seats cannot trap a pig.

Pig Signal Indicators

Pig signal (pig detector) valves are installed at key points along the pipeline to confirm pig passage. These are typically small-bore needle valves mounted to the mainline with a mechanical or electronic indicator that is triggered when the pig passes.

Pig Trap Valves

  • Launcher/receiver kicker valves: divert flow to push pig into trap

  • Trap isolation valves: full-bore gate or ball valves isolating the pig trap

  • Bypass valves: allow pipeline flow to continue while trap is serviced

  • Blowdown valves: depressurize trap before opening

API 6D Requirements

API 6D specifies requirements for pipeline valves including bore dimensions and tolerances for piggable service. Procurement specifications should reference API 6D and state explicitly that the valve is for piggable service.
