Lift check valves must be installed in a horizontal orientation with the flow entering from below the seat. This gravity-assisted design ensures reliable closing even at low flow velocities. They are commonly specified in pressure classes up to 2500 LB and are widely used in power plants, oil and gas processing, and chemical injection systems.

Dual Plate Check Valves: Compact and Lightweight

Dual plate check valves (also known as wafer check valves or double door check valves) use two spring-loaded half-discs (plates) that open with forward flow and close rapidly when flow reverses. Their wafer-style, compact design makes them ideal for installations where space and weight are limited, such as offshore platforms, shipboard piping systems, and tight equipment room layouts.

The spring-assisted closing mechanism of dual plate check valves provides fast response to reverse flow, minimizing the risk of water hammer. They are available in wafer and lug-type configurations, with sizes from 2 inch to 24 inch and pressure classes up to 1500 LB. Dual plate check valves are increasingly popular in modern piping system designs due to their compact footprint, lightweight construction, and reliable performance.

How to Select the Right Check Valve

When selecting a check valve, consider flow velocity, pressure class, installation orientation, available space, and the nature of the fluid. For low-velocity general service with ample space, swing check valves are the most economical choice. For high-pressure gas or liquid applications, lift check valves offer superior performance. For compact installations and fast-closing requirements, dual plate check valves are the modern solution. Additionally, consider noise and water hammer concerns, as certain check valve types are more prone to slamming than others.
