Valve Seat Design: Soft Seat vs Metal Seat Selection Guide


Valve seat selection determines sealing performance, temperature limits, and cycle life. This guide compares soft seat and metal seat designs, covering materials, pressure ratings, and application criteria per API 608 and API 6D.


Soft seats use non-metallic materials such as PTFE, PEEK, Nylon, or Delrin. They provide bubble-tight shutoff (ISO 5208 Rate A) at moderate temperatures and pressures. Soft seats are the standard choice for general industrial ball and butterfly valves.

PTFE (Teflon): Temperature range -50 to 200degC. Excellent chemical resistance. Low friction. Most common soft seat material for ball valves.

PEEK (Polyetheretherketone): Temperature range -40 to 260degC. Higher mechanical strength than PTFE. Good for steam and thermal oil service. More expensive than PTFE.

Nylon and Delrin: Temperature range -20 to 120degC. High mechanical strength. Used for high-pressure gas service. Not suitable for corrosive media.


Metal seats use hardened metal alloys such as 316 stainless steel, Stellite (Co-Cr alloy), or tungsten carbide. Metal seats withstand high temperatures (up to 800degC), abrasive media, and high cycling rates.

Stellite-faced seats: Cobalt-chromium alloy welded to the seat surface. Hardness 40-45 HRC. Used for steam, high-temperature oil, and abrasive slurry service.

Tungsten carbide seats: Hardness 90 HRA. Used for severe erosion service such as mining slurry and catalyst handling. Very expensive but lasts 5-10x longer than Stellite in erosive service.


Sealing performance: Soft seats achieve bubble-tight shutoff. Metal seats typically allow minor leakage (ISO 5208 Rate B or C). For toxic or hazardous service, soft seats are preferred.

Temperature: Soft seats limited to 260degC (PEEK). Metal seats rated up to 800degC. For steam above 250degC, metal seats are required.

Abrasion resistance: Soft seats wear quickly in abrasive media. Metal seats (especially tungsten carbide) are designed for abrasive slurry service.

Cycle life: Soft seats typically 5,000-50,000 cycles. Metal seats 100,000+ cycles. For high-cycling control valves, metal seats are more economical over the valve lifetime.


Fire-safe valves use a dual-seat design: primary soft seat for normal operation and secondary metal seat for fire conditions. When the soft seat melts in a fire, the metal seat provides emergency sealing per API 607 requirements.



Choose metal seats when: 1. Service temperature exceeds 260degC. 2. Media contains abrasive particles. 3. Valve will be cycled more than 50,000 times. 4. Fire-safe certification is required (metal seat as secondary seal).


Generally no. Metal seats allow minor leakage by design. However, lapped metal seats (precision-matched ball and seat) can achieve near-zero leakage for limited time. For guaranteed bubble-tight shutoff, soft seats are required.
