Knife Gate Valves: Applications in Pulp, Paper, and Wastewater

Knife gate valves are specially designed for handling thick slurries, pulp, wastewater, and bulk powder media that would jam or damage conventional gate valves. Their simple construction and effective sealing make them indispensable in several industries.
Knife Gate Valve Design
The knife gate valve uses a thin, flat gate (blade) that slides downward through the media to close. The sharp leading edge cuts through fibrous or particulate media. Unlike conventional gate valves, knife gate valves are designed to handle media that fills the valve body when open.
Seat and Seal Types
Metal seats: integral to the valve body; suitable for abrasive slurries at moderate temperatures
Resilient seats: elastomer (EPDM, NBR) provides improved shutoff for pulp and sludge applications
Bi-directional seats: seal in both flow directions; required for applications where backflow occurs
Packing gland seal: stuffing box seals the gate shaft from process leakage
Applications
Pulp and paper: stock valves on pulp lines at 2-4% consistency; chip bin isolation
Wastewater treatment: sludge isolation, digester isolation, screenings handling
Mining and mineral processing: tailings slurry, concentrate lines, thickener underflow
Power generation: fly ash sluicing, bottom ash handling
Food processing: thick pastes, grain slurries
Leakage Considerations
Knife gate valves are not designed for tight shutoff equivalent to ball or gate valves. Leakage class per ASME FCI 70-2 is typically Class II to IV. For applications requiring tight shutoff, resilient seat designs or separate isolation valves may be needed.
Actuator Selection
Knife gate valves can be manually operated with handwheels, chain operators, or automated with pneumatic or electric actuators. Actuator torque must account for the weight of the gate and the friction resistance of seals and packing.
Standards
MSS SP-81 and TAPPI TIS 405-4 cover knife gate valve specifications. European standard EN 13 906 also addresses knife gate valves. Project specifications typically reference applicable standards and add service-specific requirements.
